Dolphin Watch
Many dolphin species can be seen in New Zealand.
This Common Dolphin has a tall dorsal fin and pale yellow side patches. It is found in coastal waters in New Zealand. It is the most numerous dolphin around the New Zealand coast. It reaches 1.7–2.4 metres in length.
The Bottlenose Dolphin has a long, blunt beak. The body is different shades of grey, darker above and lighter on the belly. Globally there is wide variation in size, from 2.4 to 4 metres.
The Hector’s dolphin is one of the world’s rarest and smallest dolphins species in the world. Adult females reach a maximum size of about 1.4m, while adult males are a little smaller at 1.3m. A newborn dolphin is just 76cm, which is incredibly small for a marine mammal.
New Zealand offers a wide selection of dolphin watching and swimming tours. Operators take great care not to harm the dolphins, and some of the tour price often goes towards dolphin conservation.
