Insurance and Other Cover.
When you rent a Hertz car while travelling within New Zealand, it is important to know that you are protected in the event of an accident.

Liability Cover.

Hertz provides liability cover at no additional charge – a maximum $1,000,000 toward property belonging to a 3rd party excluding passengers in the Hertz vehicle, including any animal.

Loss Damage Waiver (LDW)
Renters are subject to the ACCIDENT DAMAGES EXCESS (ADE) for which a credit card imprint and authorisation is taken at the beginning of the rental. This will not be charged if the vehicle is returned undamaged or there has been no cause or contribution to an accident. ADE may be reduced by purchasing the ACCIDENT EXCESS REDUCTION (AER).

Most Hertz rates in New Zealand include Loss Damage Waiver* (LDW) which provides cover for accident damage to the Hertz vehicle and/or Third Party Property. In the event of accident damage, Accident Damages Excess (ADE) will apply. This is the amount the renter contributes towards the loss or damage.
*As long as you comply with the rental terms and conditions.

Damage is defined but not limited to:

  • Damage caused by an accident. If a third party was at fault we will still charge the excess to the renter until we are paid out by the third party or liability has been agreed with their Insurer.

  • Damage caused by or sustained in the event of theft, attempted theft, vandalism or break in, however, ADE will only apply if the renter has not taken reasonable care in parking the vehicle, and/or has left it untouched, when not in use.

  • Damage to windscreens and aerials.

  • Damage to wheel rims and tyres, where we can prove it was caused by negligent driving and not by a blowout due to the fault of the tyre.

Optional Renter Protection Services.
You have the option to reduce the ADE and waive the excess by purchasing Accident Excess Reduction (AER). For the highest level of protection, Hertz offers an optional, all inclusive, Renter Protection Package (PKG) which combines AER with the benefits of Personal Accident Insurance (PAI) and Personal Effects Cover (PEC). The package is offered at a discounted rate. You are free however, to choose combinations of these optional services that best meets your needs, however PEC is only available as an option when taken as part of the Package (PKG) or in conjunction with Personal Accident Insurance. (PAI)

Renter Protection Package (PKG) combines AER with the benefits of PAI & PEC. Discounted rate, highest level of protection.

Accident Excess Reduction (AER) reduces your Accident Damages Excess (ADE) for damage to the Hertz vehicle and 3rd Party Property.

Personal Accident Insurance (PAI) provides benefits up to a max cover of NZ$100,000 (The Compensation) for accidental death or bodily injury for the authorised driver and /or passengers. The maximum amount payable for a passenger shall be 10% (Ten Percent) of The Compensation and the balance of The Compensation shall be payable to the authorised driver.

Personal Effects Cover (PEC) provides benefits to the authorised driver and travelling companions for loss or damage to baggage and personal belongings. Limit any one article $1025
Limit per vehicle for auth driver $3025
Limit per vehicle for auth driver & passengers $6025

Basic Insurance (LDW) is included in the rates and protectsthe renter against theft and/or damage to the car. Damage to third party property is covered up to NZD$5,000,000 (INCL GST)per claim.

Travelling Inter-Island

A regular inter-island ferry service connects the North and South Islands. Hertz has locations on the main ferry wharf at both Wellington & Picton.

Hertz vehicles do not cross between the North and South Island. You will need to leave your vehicle at Hertz Picton or Wellington ferry location and collect another vehicle once you have crossed the Cook Strait. This will eliminate the cost of ferrying your vehicle since you do not need to worry about transporting it between the Islands.

Only one Hertz booking is required for standard vehicles (economy manual, compact manual, compact auto, intermediate auto and fullsize auto car classes) if you plan to travel between islands. You must advise the Hertz branch of your travel intentions when you pick up your vehicle or call Hertz at least 48 hours before you cross the Cook Strait. Staff will remind you of the procedures you should follow at that time. Unfortunately if we are not advised, we cannot guarantee a vehicle will be available. A substantial fee applies to rentals where a vehicle is returned on a different island to where it was collected.

For special vehicle classes (premium wagon, 4WD, luxury 8 seater, luxury sedan and premium 4WD car classes), one booking per island must be made. If you are trying to make one booking to cover both islands for a special vehicle class, you will get an error message saying 'no rate applies' or 'vehicle not available'. In this instance you will need to make separate bookings per island.
